$2,000 East Bay Open Coming Oct. 11 to San Ramon
149 players competed at the Tri-Valley Sept Open at Cottonwood Creek School, a co-presentation of Emerald Hills Chess, the Tri-Valley Chess League, and Emerald Knights Chess Club and part of our monthly tournament series.
In the 18-player Open Championship, Teddy Usman repeated his perfect 4-0 performance from August to take first and win the $150 first prize. Usman’s key victory was again over May champion Raghav Ramesh in round three.
Another past champion Kadir Baki tied for second at 3-1 with Ramesh, splitting $140.
In the 38-player Experts (U1200) section, Dhruv Jadhav and Pradyun Mekala (Warm Springs Elementary) tied for first place with perfect 4-0 scores, taking trophies and $75 each home.
Seven players tied for third place with strong 3-1 records, in tiebreak order: Mahat Aravind (MSJE), Abhi Kumar, Adhvik Nuti* (Fallon), Aditya Ashwin* (Cottonwood), Anvit Nadendla (Cottonwood, 1st U1000), Tejas Bhatkhande, and Varchasv Garg* (Fallon). Viaan Rai (Bella Vista Elementary) picked up the 2nd place U1000 trophy.

In the 43-player Premier (U800) youth/adult section, Charith Pavuluri went a perfect 4-0 to take first. Sreekar Macherla (Emerald HS) and Eileen Zhang (Fallon) tied for second with undefeated 3.5-0.5 scores.
Eight players tied for 4th place with strong 3-1 scores: Advaith Subramonia (Harvest Park), Vihaan Annam* (Amador), Rishvik Paruchuri (Kolb), Oliver Yu* (Wells), Advaith Aravind, Rohith Nukala (1st U600), Mihir Kolpuru (John Green), and Nico Xiao* (Fallon). Arjun Sharma (Amador) was 2nd U600.
In the 30-player K12 Challenger, Zhiyuan Tian (Kolb) and Prajan Sundaramoorthy tied for first with perfect 4-0 scores.
Seven players tied for third with 3-1 scores: Anthony Zavgorodniy (Quarry Lane), Ishan Dwivedi, Shauryveer Chaundkar, Vishnu Vandanapu, Sanjeev Senthil, Evan Li (Kolb, 1st U200), and Leonardo Fernandez (Castro Valley HS). Orion Wei (Cottonwood) took 2nd place, U200.
Finally, in the non-rated Novice round-robins, our trophy winners (min score 3.5) were:
Group 1: 1st - Joaquin Garcia (5-0), 2nd (tie) - Andy Kim* (Fallon) and Jasper Huang
Group 2: (Co-1st, 4-1) - Janmey Prakash, Dhruv Anand, and Sarvesh Velmurugan
Group 3: (Co-1st, 4-1) - Atharva Kudva and Kedarnath Kalidindi
