111 youth and adult players competed at the Tri-Valley Open on May 17th at John Green Elementary in Dublin, a co-presentation of Emerald Hills Chess and Tri-Valley Chess League and part of our monthly tournament series.

In the Open Championship, Raghav Ramesh and Reyansh Nuti (Fallon*, * indicating one of 300 students at Emerald Hills Chess programs) both scored multiple upsets to finish undefeated at 3.5-0.5. They each won $115 for tying for first place.
Abhijoy Mukherjee (DHS, Emerald Hills coach), Alexandru Chu and Rayan Jain (Fallon*) all tied for third at 3-1, with Mukherjee and Jain splitting $60, and Chu winning $60 for the Top U1200 prize.
In the 24-player Experts (U1200) youth/adult section, Arnav Solan (Fallon*) and Nivedh Panchal* (Mendenhall) tied for first with undefeated 3.5-0.5 scores, each winning $75 and trophies. There was a three-way tie for 3rd at 3-1, in tiebreak order: Varchasv Garg (Fallon*), Arjun Shenoy (Fallon*), and Kendall Poon.
Three players won U1000 trophies with 2.5-1.5 scores - Arjun Maddi (Diablo Vista), Abhi Arun Kumar (Horner MS), and Anay Ketan Patel.
In the massive 44-player Premier (U800) youth/adult section, there was a three-way tie for first with perfect 4-0 scores: Agastya Gannavarapu, Ethan Sam (Sacred Heart Saratoga) and Saketh Pagadala (Fallon*).
Ten players tied for 4th with strong 3-1 scores. In tiebreak order: Nikhil Kaushik (Hearst*), Oliver Yu (Wells*), Anvit Nadendla (Cottonwood*), Yijie Chu (Emerald HS), Ismail Khalid (Fallon*), Yash Bhagat (Diablo Vista, 1st U600), Briyan Chen (Amador Elementary), Surya Vanapalli (Lydiksen), Arastu Shrivastava (Amador, 2nd U600 for second month in a row), and Eileen Zhang (Fallon).
In the K-12 U400-rated youth Challenger, Suhan Bansal and Tejas Bhatkhande (Mendenhall) tied for first out of 17 players with undefeated 3.5-0.5 scores. Aalexander Cuarezma (Central Valley Chess Academy*) finished 3rd at 3-1, ahead of Vedant Rao (Coyote Creek*) and Kai Alexander Neta.
Ayaan Karia (Mohr*) won Top U200, while Ian Ding (Walnut Grove*) took the 2nd U200 trophy.
Rishaan Gupta (Coyote Creek*) and Shivansh Singhal tied for first in the 9-player Novices with 4-1 records. Maneet Sisodia and Ananth Srivastava (Coyote Creek*) tied for third with 3.5-1.5 scores.

Social Chess Nights for Adults Debut in June
With COVID, the Netflix show “Queen’s Gambit,” and the resulting online chess boom, chess has become the new pickleball - a fun, social game that connects people.
Our new weekly casual chess nights are open to adults (19+) of all levels, including:

Four week-long, half-day youth summer camps this summer in three convenient Tri-Valley locations.
They will feature small group classes tailored to each student’s level taught by experienced, engaging instructors. We’ll also hold USCF-rated games, play exciting variants like bughouse and blitz, and give out trophies to top players.
