163 youth and adult players competed for fun, glory, and 40+ trophies and $500 in cash prizes at the Tri-Valley Open on Feb 22nd at Cottonwood Creek School in Dublin.
The 22-player Open section was won by Emerald Hills Chess coach Red Tengco, who went a perfect 4-0 to win the $150 first prize, defeating our fellow coach, Fred Sabobo, on first board in the final round.
There was a six-way tie for second place at 3-1 between Kanav Maheshwari, repeat cash winner Caleb Leong, Sabobo, Austin Chen (4th month in a row tied for 2nd!), Toma Yuen, and Pleasanton Middle School’s Ansh Shah. They each win $33.33.
In the 34-player Experts (U1200) youth/adult section, Sairaghav Kumar won clear first and the $100 cash prize with a perfect 4-0 score.
Aaron Ahsan repeated as runner-up with an undefeated 3.5-0.5 score, winning $50.
Nine players tied for 4th at 3-1, led (in tiebreak order) by Granite Oaks Middle School’s Mason Deeble, Mission Hills Middle School’s Bradley Harger III, Ryan Chan Saha, Ansh Ankit Doshi, Sathvik Vedula, Shlok Narayan, Fallon Middle School’s Arnav Solan, Mission San Jose Elementary’s Mahat Aravind (top U1000), and Dublin High/Emerald Hills Chess Coach Evan Lim. Fallon’s Advaith Nadiminti picked up the 2nd place, U1000 trophy.
Modesto’s Luke Zhong and Aarav Ganesh from host Cottonwood Creek School tied for first in the 45-player Premier (U800) youth/adult section with perfect 4-0 scores.
Live Oak Elementary’s Andrei Labutin and Fallon’s Ritvik Gudivaka tied for 3rd with undefeated 3.5-0.5 scores.
Ten players tied for fifth with strong 3-1 scores, in tiebreak order: Dhruv Jadhav (Coyote Creek Elementary/Emerald Hills Chess), Cottonwood’s Elaina Japson, Kolb Elementary’s Aven Kaya Nagata, Adrel Coutinho (Coyote Creek Elementary/Emerald Hills Chess), Eason Zhang, Fallon’s Chris Ephraim Raja (1st U600), Mason Tatlonghari (2nd U600), Byron Li, Fallon’s Dev Girish Kumar, and Fallon’s Aksh Prasad.
In the 36-player K-12 U400-rated Challenger, Josiah Choi and Fairland Elementary’s Ryan Banerjee tied for first with perfect 4-0 scores. Neti Deshpande won sole third with 3.5-0.5.
Four players tied for fourth place with 3-1 scores: Cottonwood’s Mahatru Gonugunta, Ilan Ram Kumar, Cottonwood’s Samarth Vineeth, and Mohr Elementary/Emerald Hills Chess’s Raghav Tiwari.
Three players tied for top U200 - Alan Chen, Venpa Ram Kumar, and Aadhya Maddala.
Finally, 22 first-time youth players competed in the non-rated Novices section.
