More than sixty local K-12 players - and six adults! - competed at Wells Middle School on Saturday Jan 20th for fun, glory and trophies.
(Even more photos at our Facebook post.)
The Challenger section attracted 19 (unrated under 300 rated) players competing in 6- and 7-player round robins. The trophy winners (min 4 out of 5) were:
Group A: Nolan Woo and Benjamin Josan, both of Fallon Middle School
Group B: Hearst Elementary’s Nikhil Kaushik

In the 20-player Premier section (U600 rating), first-timer Jessica Jiang of Amador Valley HS and Abhinav Garg of cross-town Foothill HS tied for first with perfect 4-0 records, with Jessica taking first on tiebreak.
Four players tied for 3rd with outstanding 3-1 scores: John Green Elementary’s Adhyan Banuri, Hart Middle School’s Krithave Vijaya Anand, and Aparna Raj and Arnav Goyal, both of Fallon.
Rounding out the trophy winners tied in 7th place were Arham Shah of host school Wells and Alan Wan of Dublin High School.
In the 22-player Championship (600+ rating), Fallon’s Preron Chakrabarty repeated as co-champion, going a perfect 4-0 along with October co-champion Arjunsai Navaneetha Prabhu of Fairlands Elementary, with Prabhu narrowly taking first on tiebreak.
Three players tied for 3rd with 3-1 scores: Fallon’s Rayan Jain, Wells’ Dev Rawal, and Fallon’s Arjun Shenoy. Amador Valley HS’s Rehan Farooqi tied for sixth with Fallon’s Ishman Gogte.
Finally, in our first adults-only tournament, Prafulla Rawal (above left) went a perfect 5-0 to claim first place, making him and Dev father-son trophy winners!
We plan to continue the free, unrated tournament and encourage all parents, whatever your level, to join in the fun and compete along with your child!
Full Standings: Challenger and Premier/Championship and Adults-Only
USCF rated results: Challenger and Premier/Championship
Two notes:
Challenger games are ONLY quick-rated due to the fast time controls. Players looking to improve their Standard USCF rating and overall level of play should move up to the Premier or Championship sections.
A rating system explainer. New player ratings will both go up AND down dramatically. As players get more tournament games under their belt, their ratings become more stable and accurate.
Big Thank Yous! from the chief TDs and organizers (Emerald Hills’ Eric Lai and Bhavna Jain and TVCL’s Aryan Kumar and Aryan Achuthan) to:
Wells PFC for hosting us, in particular President Annie Torok
Assistant tournament director Tharun Prem Anandh of Dublin HS, as well as our floor TDs: Dublin HS’s Gavin Katz and Tri-Valley Chess League members Jaymin Byun, Nirav Jaiswal, and Advay Bajpal.
