Aug 10th at Mathnasium

Eighty-one players competed on Saturday Aug 10th, with the morning K-12 Novice, K-12 Challenger and Over-21 sections for newer tournament players, and the afternoon rated Premier and Championship sections open to advanced players of all ages (including adults) and both featuring $100 cash first prizes again thanks to our host, Mathnasium Pleasanton

In the non-rated K-12 Novice for first-time youth players, Snehal Umirigar took first with a perfect 5-0 record over second-place Zachary Spitzer.


In the rated 21-player K-12 U400-rated Challenger, Matthew Bhadra went a perfect 4-0 to take first


Abhi Arun Kumar and Neel Nayak tied with undefeated 3.5/4 records, with Abhi taking second based on tiebreak (here’s an explainer).


There was a three-way tie for 4th at 3-1, they were in tiebreak order: Aaditya Amin, Virat Singh, and Devagya Jain. Brendan Ma won the top U200/Unrated trophy on tiebreak.


Chetan Patil did a rare double, taking first in both the non-rated Over-21 section as well as the 26-player U800 Premier section, where he shared the $100 first prize with Adrit Nudurupati (both were 4-0).


Rishi Tumkur, Abhi Arun Kumar, Viraj Katkar and Chris Hobbs tied for third at 3-1, with Hobbs taking the U600/Unrated trophy.


In the 22-player 800+ Championship section, Kadir Baki (May Tri-Valley champion) took home the $100 first prize with a perfect 4-0 score. 


Five players tied for second at 3-1. In tiebreak order they were: Kiaan Singh, Bennett Liang, Rayan Jain, Preron Chakrabarty and Gautham Ramalingam.

Our next tournament is a BIG ONE: the 2024 East Bay Open!


Replacing the annual fall Dublin K-12 Championships, this takes place Saturday Sept. 7th to Fallon Middle School in Dublin. 


With $2,000 in cash prizes, the tournament is expected to draw 200+ players from around the Bay Area, including world-class GMs competing for the $500 first prize! 


There will also be many trophies for players in the four lower sections, including the Premier, Challenger and Novices!
